Try our ‘find your mask fit’ guide to find the mask that fits your hair’s needs the best.

Can I use hair mask after oiling my hair?
Preferably no. Hair oils cover the hair shaft quite well and may prevent the hair mask ingredients to work on your strands. One way to include both products in your haircare regimen is to apply hair oil before shampoo and use hair mask post shampoo.

What is the best time to use a hair mask?
For deep conditioning masks- Post shampoo. Clean and damp hair are the best for applying any moisturising treatment like regular conditioners, deep conditioning masks and even leave in conditioners.

For exfoliating or deep cleansing scrubs and masks- Pre shampoo. People with long/thick/curly hair may prefer to use such products pre shampoo as most exfoliating treatments contain physical exfoliants that may be easier to wash off with shampoo post use.
people with short/smooth/straight hair can use it both ways, either pre or post shampoo.

How long should i keep a hair mask on?
For conditioning masks, minimum 5 minutes and maximum 45 minutes. Deep conditioning masks need more time than regular conditioners to moisturise your strands effectively.
For exfoliating masks, not more than 1-5 minutes. Cleansing masks or cleansing products in general do not need a lot of time to perform. Leaving them on for longer can lead to dryness or irritation.

Can I use a deep conditioning mask in place of a conditioner?
Yes, you can use a deep conditioning mask in place of a conditioner. Ideally, a deep conditioner should be used twice a week.

Should I apply a deep conditioning mask on my scalp?
This depends on the general condition of your scalp. If your scalp is normal to greasy or dandruff prone, avoid application on scalp and focus on mid-length to hair tips. If your scalp is feeling dry, use a little amount on your scalp and generous amounts on the hair length. Do not leave it on the scalp for too long. Read the product label and consult the brand for specific directions.

Ways to use your favourite hair mask

Deep Conditioning Masks

Post Shampoo:
1. Squeeze out excess water from wet hair or lightly towel dry. Your hair should be damp, neither soaking wet nor dry.
2. Apply the hydrating mask all over hair, focusing on ends. Leave on for 5 to 15 minutes.
3. For deeper conditioning, tuck hair into a shower cap and wrap with a warm towel(soaked in warm water) and leave on for 30 minutes. If the towel gets cold too soon, soak it again in warm water and wrap again. Ensure that the water is not too hot, it should be comfortable.
4. Rinse well with lukewarm to cool water. Seal moisture into ends with a moisturising serum, if required.

Pre Shampoo:
1. Wet hair and squeeze out excess water. Hair should be damp.
2. Apply hydrating mask all over hair focussing on ends. Leave on for at least 30 minutes.
3. For deeper conditioning, tuck hair into a shower cap and wrap with a warm towel(soaked in warm water) and leave on for 30 minutes. If the towel gets cold too soon, soak it again in warm water and wrap again. Ensure that the water is not too hot, it should be comfortable.
4. Shampoo scalp with a mild hair cleanser. Gently massage the scalp while shampooing. Do not apply excess shampoo to hair strands. While rinsing the scalp, run the soapy water along the length.
5. Rinse well with lukewarm to cool water. Follow with a conditioner if required.

Pro Tip: Invest in a flaxseed heat cap. These are caps with a flaxseed filling between two layers of fabric. The two layers are stitched together in the shape of a shower cap. To use, you can microwave the cap for a few minutes until the flaxseeds inside heat up. In step 3, instead of a hot towel, you can wear this cap over the shower cap.
